George Luman, 92, one of the oldest residents of Van Buren County, died at his home in Milton at 2:30 a.m. Sunday. He had been critically ill for several weeks.
George Luman was born November 10, 1844 in a log cabin in Muskingum, Ohio, the son of Laban and Rachel Shipley Luman. He moved with his parents to Keokuk when a small boy, moving from there to West Point Iowa and later to the state of Missouri. He was married December 18, 1867 to America Helen Colvin and moved back to Iowa on a farm west of Milton. They moved to Milton about 31 years ago, where Mrs. Luman died in 1919.
Mr. Luman was the father of seven children, all of whom survive; Robert W. Luman of Benton Harbor Michigan, Mrs. Cora Ellen Pinnell and Mrs. Clara Alice Hyde both of Oklahoma, Dr. Frank E. Luman of Edina Missouri, Mrs. Mary Kntzner of Gorin Missouri, and James A. Luman and Mrs. Fern (Iva) Atkins of Milton. He also leaves 19 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Burnett Funeral Home in Milton in charge of the Rev. E.S. Hehner, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church. Pallbearers were W.D. Sherwood, Paul Hoskins, O.E. Rowland, C.O. Allen, M.E. Atkins, and A.R. Norman. Mrs. W.D. Sherwood and Mrs. M.E. Atkins sang with piano accompaniment by Mrs. J.I. Sell. Burial was in the Milton Sunnyside Cemetery. Milton Herald July 29, 1937.
