DEATH OF CLEM PHILIPS
Was oldest Man in Van Buren County
Grippe and old age given as the Cause
On Monday night at his home on North Main Street occurred the death of Clem Philips, the oldest man in Van Buren County, at the advanced age of nearly 94 years, hi 93rd birthday being last July.
Mr. Philips was a highly respected man of this county and town, having been a resident here since the spring of 1854, when he come here from near Birmingham and located on the farm occupied by his son James and family. About twelve years ago he left the farm and moved to his present home on North Main Street. For the past six years or more he has not been able to come down town, being an exceptionally portly gentleman, It was considerable trouble for him to remain upon his feet for any length of time.
Up to last Friday he wa in his unual health, when he seemed to begin sneezing and a cold took possession of him from which he never rallied, passing away at half past five,Monday evening in a calm and peaceful sleep. Grippe and old age are given as the cause of his rather sudden demise.
The funeral services were held at his late home on Thursday morning conducted by Rev. J.W. Stine, of the Methodist Episcopal church and in charge of Undrtaked Davidson. Ineterment was had in the Spencer cemetery northeast of the city.Death occurred on Jan 3, 1916. The above article was published in the Stockport News on Jan 7, 1916. Clemuel came to VB County in 1854 from Illinois and purchased the farm that was later taken over by his son James.
