Mary Ann Handsby was born Sept. 30, 1840, in Ohio; died at her home in Pittsburg, Iowa, Dec. 12, 1916, age 76 years, 2 months and 12 days. She came to Iowa when 6 years of age, and grew to womanhood near Iowaville. She was married to Robert Thompson Reed July 24, 1862. He preceded her to the better world in 1899. To this union were born 4 children. The eldest, Andrew, died in infancy, George William died in 1906, Mrs. Sadie Steeves of Eldon and Oscar of Pittsburg, also 3 grandchildren, one brother in Arkansas, and one sister in California, survive. The most of her married life had been spent in Pittsburg. She united with the Presbyterian church in early life, and changed her membership to the Methodist church after moving to Pittsburg. She was a member of the Rebekah lodge of Keosqua [sic-s/b Keosauqua]. Ten years ago she was afflicted with a severe illness, and from that time had been a sufferor [sic]. Almost two years ago she had la grippe, and had been failing ever since. About three weeks ago she took her bed, and although all was done that loving hands could do, the Lord claimed her for his own Tuesday morning. She was a patient sufferer. Everything was all right. She was kind and considerate to all. Always ready to give a helping hand. Glad to see and speak with her friends to the last. She was a kind and loving mother, to others as well as her own children. She was ready to go when the Lord called. Besides her family she leaves a host of friends, by whom she will be sadly missed.
