OBITUARIES
----------
MRS. MARY JANE TAYLOR

Mary Jane Sample, daughter of Jeremiah and Jane Sample, was born in Salem, Ohio, Nov. 3, 1834. At an early day she came with her parents and other members of the family to Iowa, Oskaloosa being the object point. However the steam boat which brought them up the Des Moines went aground at the dam at Keosauqua, which with time to make needed repairs delayed the journey for some days. In the mean time Mr. Sample found a farm, one mile from Mt. Sterling, which pleased him. This he purchased and here he made his home and reared a family of eight children. October 4, 1858, Mary was married to Dr. Frederick J. Taylor, a young doctor at Mt. Sterling. Two years later they moved to the farm in Vernon township, where they ever after lived and died, the husband in 1893. They were the parents of one child, Frederick J. Taylor, who with his family lived with his mother.

Mrs. Taylor united with the Presbyterian church in early life, and attended services at the Alcorn house at Mt. Sterling in an early day, the first religious services held at that place. She was a good christian woman, a loving wife and mother and a good neighbor.

Hers was a sudden death. On February 4, 1908, in her usual health she stepped from the house into the yard, and a few minutes later was found in a dying condition. In spite of all that could be done she survived only a short time. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Chas. E. Perkins, assisted by the Congregational choir, were held at the home February 7, and the interment was in the Oaklawn cemetery at Keosauqua, by the side of her husband.
