JOHN L. KIRKHART
Nov. 20, 1830, John L. Kirkhart was born in Highland county, Ohio, and died Feb. 23, 1907, at his home in Milton, Iowa, aged 76 years, 2 months and 26 days. On Jany. 26, 1854, he married Mary E. Oldaker. To them seven children were born, all of whom, with the wife and mother, were at his bedside the last days of his life. The children are: W.J. of Cantril, Iowa; Lida Borden of Carson, Iowa; J.W. of Milton and Henrietta Morris of Milton; L.S. of Mt. Sterling; Ella Austin of Carson, Iowa, and Mary E. Corwin of Mt. Zion. In 1861 Mr. Kirkhart enlisted in Co. H., Third Iowa Cavalry and served faithfully during the war. Forty-nine years ago he united with the M.E. church and ever afterwards was a faithful follower of his Savior. He moved from Ohio to Iowa in 1854, spending the following winter in Oskaloosa working at his trade, that of blacksmithing. The next year he moved to Birmingham and from there to Cedar township where he lived until 1880, when he moved to Roscoe township, Davis county, and in 1886 to Milton where he resided the remainder of his life. Mr. Kirkhart was a noble man. His was r [sic] useful life. He lived for others more than for himself and was beloved by all his acquaintances. He will be sincerely mourned by the people of his home and by all who knew him. The funeral was held Monday, Feb. 25, conducted by Rev. Martin in the M.E. church, the interment being in the new cemetery at Milton.
