ALEX. COLEMAN, 94,
PAVED ROA DONOR,
DIED LAST MONDAYFUNERAL SERVICES HELD AT
HOME OF NIECE NEAR
HILLSBORO TUESDAYAlex. Coleman, age 94, civil war veteran and Lee county pioneer, died Monday morning at Sacred Heart hospital in Ft. Madison following an illness of about one month.
Mr. Coleman built for himself a monument which will long endure when he donated $250,000 for the construction of a paved highway from Hillsboro past his old home to highway number 61. During recent months, he had made his home with his niece, Mrs. L. C. Rhody, at Hillsboro. Prior to that time he had for about seven years made his home in Ft. Madison.
He was born in Zanesville, Ohio, and came to Iowa when a boy of six years. He settled in Lee county with his parents. When the civil war asked for volunteers he was one of five brothers to enlist and he served throughout the entire war, after which he returned to Lee county and engaged in farming.
The urge to go west came and he spent several years there, being successful in his undertakings. He was never married and was the last survivor of a family of fifteen children all of whom were reared and settled in Lee county.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at the home of his niece, Mrs. Rhody, south[can't read] of Hillsboro with burial in Bales cemetery.
