Mr. Lowell Valentine, one of the oldest and best known citizens of Keosauqua, died Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock after an invalidism of a year or more, aged 89 years, five months and two days.
Mr. Valentine had been a resident of this town or immediate vicinity for nearly 60 years. He was born in Paris, Maine, August 29, 1820, coming to Iowa in 1850. He was engaged in the furniture business here for 36 years and for the past 12 to 15 years had been a partner in the firm of Maltbie & Valentine, dealers in general merchandise, Mr. Maltbie however having the management of the business.
In 1842 Mr. Valentine was united in marriage to Miss Judith W. Hackett; he was again married in 1872 to Miss Mary Powers of this place, who died about three years ago.
Mr. Valentine had been afflicted with blindness the past four or five years, and for several months had been confined to his home. He had been very feeble since his sicknes [sic] of three weeks ago, but he had suffered but little. Sunday he spoke of having a slight pain or irritation in his chest. Of late he had slept a good deal. On Sunday he fell asleep for the last time, sleeping on until his death, which occurred at 3:20 Monday afternoon.
(Mr.) Valentine was tenderly cared for by his devoted sister, Mrs. Bridgman. Tuesday noon a brother, Mr. John Valentine, arrived from Denver. The funeral was held at the late residence yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. (?) W. Cheney conducting the service.
