On Friday, Nov. 6, 1903, Dr. Gideon S. Bailey died at his home in Vernon, this county, aged 94 years, 5 months and 5 days. He was, as we understand it, the last living member of the First General Assembly of the territorial government of what is now Iowa, which met in the old Methodist church building in Burlington in the winter of 1838. He was born at Louisville, Ky., June 3, 1809, coming to this county in 1837, settling where he died. Besides serving in the legislature previously named, he was a member of the legislature in 1841 and 1843 and was a member of the constitutional convention of 1858. In 1861 he was a member of the state senate. He served a term as United States marshal under President Polk. His first wife died in 1865. By her he was the father of two children. In 1869 he married Anna M. Schneck. To them one child, Gideon C.S., was born, who has made his residence at the parental home. The funeral was held Sunday, Nov. 8, and was largely attended, the burial being in the Vernon cemetery.
