Leo Clayton Syfert was born April 3, 1898, in Van Buren county, Iowa, near Winchester, and departed this life Dec. 23, 1918, at the age of 20 years, 8 months and 20 days. His death was caused by an attack of influenza, followed by pneumonia. Leo's home has always been at Winchester, where he gave his heart to God and became a member of the Methodist church. There being no young people of his age in the Sunday school and feeling the need of the companionship of such, he became a member of the Star class of the Presbyterian church at Birmingham, from which he received much inspiration and help. When finishing the grade school at Winchester he entered high school at Birmingham and graduated there with the class of 1914. Since then he has been on the farm with his father until he responded to his country's call and entered the S. A. T. C. at Parsons college, Fairfield. He leaves to mourn his departure his father, mother and one sister Edith of Birmingham, and one brother Walter of Blandensville, Ill., besides a host of relatives and friends which were appreciated by him so much during his life and sickness. Funeral was held at the home at 2 p. m. Dec. 26, in charge of Rev. Jordan, assisted by Rev. Bock of Birmingham. He was laid to rest in the Winchester cemetery by the side of his sister Pearl.

We desire to thank our friends and neighbors for the kindness expressed by them in word and deed during our recent bereavement in the death of our dear son and brother.
