Martha E. Geyer was born March 14th, A. D. 1842 in Muskingdom county Ohio, near the city of Zanesville, where she lived until her marriage to Mr. John G. Vernon, September 19th, 1867. Her parents were very devoted Christian people, members of the Methodist Espiscopal [sic] church from childhood, keeping up family worship in which sister Vernon was reared. Certainly under such circumstances, what else but an early conversion could and did result. Thus from early childhood a converted follower of Christ, and a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, what else than the devoted christian life that sister Vernon has led and leaves to her children and friends as a heritage so grand, a heritage so supremely above all else that any of us may ever be able to leave for our friends. About one year after her marriage to Mr. Vernon they came to Iowa and settled on Indian Prairie near Lebenon [sic] and from thence to Vernon Prairie near Willits Station where with the family of Brother Burns now of Keosauqua, the Vernon Prairie church was organized, growing until now the church building to be dedicated in a few weeks, is a monument to the foundation work thus begun. Brother and Sister Vernon moved to Farmington in the fall of 1887 and at once united with the church, identifying themselves with all the work of the church. Bro Vernon died on Sunday February 9th, 1896. Sister Vernon died on Sunday afternoon, December 15, 1901 in the same room as that in which her husband died. She claimed the blessing of perfect love, April 1885 and has always been spiritually ready for any call of duty that either God or the church imposed, living probably as nearly without fault, above criticism and reproach as any of whom we may know. The funeral occurred Wednesday from the Baptist church, conducted by Rev. Wehn assisted by Rev. Thos. Ratcliffe. The remains were laid to rest in the Boyer cemetery.
