Lucena Davis was born in Marietta, Ohio on March 4, 1796 to William Davis and Drusilla (Olney) Davis, the second of twelve identified children. Her grandfather, Captain Daniel Davis (1742-1807) of the American Revolution, served in the militia and joined Gen. Rufus Putnam in founding the Marietta Colony. He was born in Oxford, Mass., and died in Waterford, Ohio and is buried at the Davis plot in Marietta.
Lucena married Thomas Devin, an enterprising merchant, on March 15, 1818 in Washington County, Ohio, and gave birth to nine sons and one daughter: John, William, Michael, Rufus, Thomas, Henry, James, George, Lucena, and Samuel. The daughter and three of the sons died as infants, but six of her sons became successful businessmen, two were attorneys, and one married the sister of President Benjamin Harrison. She unfortunately did not live long enough to see any of her grandchildren.
The family lived in Watersford and McConnelsville, Ohio and moved near Oxford in 1835 to be close to Ohio University, and thence two years subsequently to Decatur, Illinois. In 1839, with seven children, the family moved to Iowa, settling first at Pittsburg, in the Des Moines valley. Lucena died on Oct 4, 1846 at age 50 and is buried at the cemetery in Pittsburg. Her husband and some of her sons later moved to Ottumwa and Des Moines, where they were actively involved in business and community affairs.
