Long-time Harmony teacher Terry Foor dies Monday

The Harmony community was saddened Monday when a long-time Harmony High School teacher and coach Terry L. Foor, 55, of Farmington, died of an apparent heart attack while driving on Highway 2 about two miles east of Farmington early Monday evening.

Foor had been playing golf at the Green Acres Country Club in Donnellson when he complained of chest pains and left to return home, officials said.

A spokesperson for the Iowa Highway Patrol reported that Foor was westbound on Highway 2 about two miles east of Farmington, when his car went off a curve, into a ditch, through a fence and hit a tree.

Foor was taken by ambulance to the Ft. Madison Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:25 p.m.

Lee County Medical Examiner Eugenio Torres said Foor was not injured in the crash, but attributed death to a heart attack.

Foor had taught social studies at Harmony High School since 1968. He also taught physical education classes and coached both boys basketball and football.

Harmony superintendent Alan Marshall said he could tell by the atmosphere at the high school that Foor's death had shaken both the students and the staff.

"It is a shock to all of us," Marshall said.

The high school faculty and administrators held an assembly Tuesday morning to explain the situation to the students. Local clergy were available to talk with them.

Harmony industrial arts teacher Pete Boudreau who came to Harmony the same year as Foor said he was "definitely a well-liked teacher by the present and past student body."

School was dismissed two hours early Tuesday.

Foor is survived by his wife Madely (Pat), also a teacher at Harmony High School, a son, Kevin, and a daughter, Tracy, his mother and other relatives. A complete obituary can be found on page 2.
