16-year-old girl dies in July 4 accident

A 16-year-old Texas girl who was back with her family visiting relatives over the holiday weekend was killed in a single-vehicle accident near Bentonsport at 11:25 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4.

Kelly Anne Shark of Amarillo, Texas was a passenger in a pickup truck driven by Gary Seth, 23, of Farmington.

According to the Van Buren County Sheriff's office, Seth's pickup was traveling north on Van Buren County road J40 approximately 1/4 mile south of Bentonsport bridge.

After traveling some distance in the northbound ditch, the truck overturned throwing the driver and two occupants, Shark and Frank Dale Hackard, 17, of Farmington from the vehicle.

Seth was transported to Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua and was later air-lifted to Iowa City for treatment. Hackard was treated at Van Buren County Hospital and released.

Shark was transported to Van Buren County Hospital where she was pronounced dead by Van Buren County Medical Examiner, Dr. James Worrell.

The accident is still under investigation by the Van Buren County Sheriff's office and the Iowa State Patrol.
