A desperate effort was made by the Locofocos to carry Van Buren county. A whiskey barrel was placed at the polls in Keosauqua and doled out gratuitously to secure votes. The jail was opened and a villain confined on a charge of "assault with intent to kill" turned loose that he might, as he did, vote the Locofoco ticket. These were some of the means used by Locofocos of Van Buren county to secure the election of thier candidates.
Every right minded man of either party must view with indignation suchnefarious prostitution of the elective franchise.
