OLD TIME FARM EQUIPMENT PHOTO
The original photo that was professionally taken in either 1916 or 1917 on a farm in Van Buren County, Iowa, and in my possession is of old time farming equipment of a Fellows threshing machine, steam engine tractor, a round bottom, spring wagon with a team of work horses wearing harness work (see below for photo).
In this photo from left to right is: James R. Burkett, married Lelah Clarissia Murphy; Ohio Murphy, married Hazel Arnold; and Charlie Murphy, married Carrie Cox. Lelah Murphy Burkett, Ohio Murphy and Charlie Murphy are children of Frederick and Jalina King Murphy.
Frederick Murphy's father was Thomas Benton Murphy, born in New Orleans, LA in 1821. When he came to this county in about 1837, Iowa was part of Wisconsin Territory, being among the first settlers of Van Buren county, the population was very small, it being for the most part an unbroken wilderness. Thomas Benton Murphy married Martha Jane Carter on Sept. 4, 1846, the year Iowa became a state and they were married for 62 years, raised 10 children in Van Buren county and both are buried in Vernon Cemetery.
Charlie and Carrie (Cox) Murphy are my grandparents and Carrie's parents are Alonzo and Mary E. (Hales) Cox who also resided their lifetime in Van Buren County; submitted for those who might have an interest in this photo.
