Roy S. Overman Leaves Commerce Commission Post

Roy S. Overman, who has been connected with many of the community affairs of Keosauqua during the past sixty years, has submitted his resignation, effective March 1, as an Inspector for the Iowa State Commerce Commission. He has been with the Commerce Commission since 1951 and his territory comprises seven counties in southeastern Iowa.

This veteran businessman was born in Keosauqua, and his father before him was a Keosauqua merchant. James Overman operated a bakery in the early days of the town and later handled a line of groceries and meats. he sold the business about 1930 to Roy, who had been a traveling salesman 24 years for J.G. Hutchison & Co. of Ottumwa. His total of 48 years "on the road" included nine years with Sprague Warner of Chicago.

Roy Overman in his early days took part in many of the activities of Keosauqua, including the town band, football team and also was a good skater. He was a member of the school board four years and for many years has been a member of the Commercial club.

A past master of Keosauqua Lodge No. 10, A.F. & A.M., he has been a member more than fifty years. Mr. Overman also is a past high priest of Moore Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, and a past commander of El Chanan Commandery, Knights Templar.

Mrs. Overman is the former Phyllis Roberts, a sister of Dr. Ralph S. Roberts, principal donor of the Roberts Memorial Building at the Van Buren County Fairgrounds.

Mr. and Mrs. Overman have a daughter, Mrs. Caroline Hill of Omaha, Nebr., and two granddaughters. Mrs. Overman is a member of P.E.O. and D.A.R., is a former school teacher and for a number of years was deputy county school superintendent.
