Here is the Justice's docket entry in the preliminary hearing:
Cantril, Iowa, May 31, 1902.
State of Iowa
vs. -- ss.
Ed. HaleIn justice court before W.A. Jones, a justice of the peace in and for Van Buren county, Iowa.
Now comes E.H. Rider and G.L. Minear and file an information accusing Ed. Hale of the crime of murder, for the said Ed. Hale did shoot and kill Zora Donaho in the town of Cantril, Iowa, on the 31st was issued and placed in the ??? of Wm. Haney, acting as constable, May 31, 1902. Warrent returned, indorsed with services, with report, also that the said Ed. Hale was being held in an old house and was not in a condition to appear and plead. Whereupon court adjourned to said building, but the prisoner from real or feigned unconsciousness could not or would not plead. Acting upon evidence taken at the coroner's inquest of Zora Donaho, a mittimus was issued committing him to the custody of the sheriff of Van Buren county, Iowa, at Keosauqua. Adjourned.
