TIRES ARE STOLEN FROM HARBIDGE MOTOR CO.
Thieves broke into the Harbidge Motor Co. in Keosauqua late Thursday night or early Friday morning, stole ten new tires and robbed the cash register of about five or six dollars. Entrance to the building was gained by breaking a window of a store room to the rear of the office, and then mashing the lock on the door leading into the office where the tires were kept.
No clues to establish the identity of the person or persons who committed the crime were found, except that an unidentified man talked with Mr. Aylor, the night watchman about 2:30 Friday morning, asking about the possibility of obtaining some gasoline, which he apparently made no attempt to get. It is thought that the stranger might have been covering up for an accomplice who would have been busy committing the robbery at that time. It was also noted that the fellow kept his car running while talking to Mr. Aylor.
A man and automobile answering the description given by him was seen later passing through Fairfield. A warning was broadcast to the Highway Patrol to be on the lookout for the thieves, and Sheriff Elwood Vance, with other officials co-operating, is working on the case, which constitutes a loss of about $200.
This is the first robbery of its kind yet to be reported in this county since tire rationing went into effect. This should serve as a warning to other garage and filling station owners to be extremely cautious in keeping new tires in a safe place.
