Word Awaited From Sailors

Some of Van Buren County Men in War Zones Have Notified Relatives of Safety.

No word has been received from the two Van Buren county boys whose ships were sunk in Pearl Harbor Sunday, December 7.

Joe Barker, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Barker of Keosauqua, was assigned to the Arizona, which was reported to have been destroyed when a bomb sank into the smoke stack of the ship, causing two explosions.

Leonard Price was assigned to the U.S.S. Utah, which also was reported sunk. Hope is being (held) that these two boys escaped and (are) now on other ships. Mr. Price (is) the son of Mr. and Mrs. E?? Price of Douds.

Mr. and Mrs. O.A. Dorson of Milton received word Tuesday from their son, Lester Dorson, saying he was all right but gave no information of his whereabouts. Some weeks ago he was aboard the U.S.S. Tennessee. His letter had been sent air mail, and was written the day after hostilities started.

Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Canaday of Birmingham received word by Clipper letter yesterday from their son, Clifford, from Pearl Harbor. He recently was aboard the U.S.S. Wright. His mail was censored. Another brother, John, believed aboard the U.S.S. Maury in the Pacific was not heard from.

Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Caswell of Stockport received word Sunday from their son, Pat, who was stationed at the destroyer base in San Diego but is believed aboard a ship in the Pacific. He was listed as being in Pearl Harbor and his parents were relieved to hear from him.

Mr. and Mrs. O.H. Brown of Stockport received word yesterday from their son, Forrest, who is in the service in Alaska.

Mr. and Mrs. Jake Silver of Stockport received a Christmas package from their son Dick who mailed it from Hawaii December 4, but have not heard from him since the war started.

Mr. and Mrs. John Slutts of Douds had heard from their son, Kenneth Slutts, regularly about twice a week from Pearl Harbor until the war started, but have not heard from him recently except through a letter, probably lost in the mail, which arrived December 16. It had been written and mailed November 29.

Ivan Reddick of Keosauqua has not been heard from for several months. He was stationed at Hawaii but is believed to have returned to the states several months ago. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Reddick of Keosauqua. His mother Mrs. Annie Burch, lives in Alta, Okla.

In last week's list John Stansberry was listed as being at Pearl Harbor but is stationed with a hospital unite in Iceland and was last heard from three weeks ago. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Stansberry of Libertyville. Another son, who was stationed aboard teh West Virginia, a ship which has reported a number of casualties, has not been heard from.

Mr. and Mrs. James Steele of Keosauqua received a clipper letter Tuesday from their son, Donold, who had returned from Wake island to Pearl Harbor.
