William Cates' bible family record

William Cates, b. 7 Dec 1843 probably in Madison or Rockcastle Co., KY, d. 5 Dec 1913, Walworth Co. WI, was the seventh of ten children born to David Cates, b. abt 1807, d. 30 Nov 1873, Madison Co., KY, and Mary Cates, b. abt 1810, VA or KY, d. 14 Oct 1877, Madison Co., KY. David and Mary Cates are probably buried in Madison Co., KY. ( Verbal information passed down through the family was that Mary's surname was CARTER.) Margaret Elizabeth Milford, b. 22 Mar 1856, IA, d. 21 Oct 1883, Vernon Township, Van Buren Co., IA, was the fourth of ten children born to William Milford, b. abt 1824, PA, and Mary J. Milford, b. 29 Mar 1830, MO, d. 12 Jul 1901, Van Buren Co., IA. Mary J. Milford is buried in the Thompson Cemetery, Vernon Township, Van Buren Co., IA, with her oldest son, William , b. 15 Dec 1847, d. 2 Dec 1913. The name BOTOM is listed on her gravestone, thus may have been her name from a second marriage.
William and Margaret Cates are buried in the Thompson Cemetery, Vernon Township, Van Buren Co., IA.

A copy of the family record pages was provided September 2001 by cousins Harriet Jean EBERT Allen and Elaine Joyce CATES Van Hoozen. The bible is in the possession of Harriet Allen and her daughter Linda Lee ALLEN Mowers. The bible apparently was passed down by William Cates to his only son John and daughter-in-law, Edith Alice WORDEN Cates, who then passed it to their oldest daughter, Alice Margaret CATES Ebert, who left it to daughter Harriet Jean EBERT Allen. The bible dated 1884 was published by the New York American Bible Society and contains both the old and new testaments with the family record between the testaments. The bible has a black hard paper cover and is in fair condition.

From the dates of the initial entries and the very obvious differences in handwriting it appears the original owner of the bible was probably William Cates when he resided in Van Buren County, Iowa and Clark County, Missouri. The initial entries are of the birth dates of William and his wife Margaret, the deaths of his parents David and Mary Cates, as well as William's marriage to Margaret Milford. These three entries, as well as the births of their three children: Jennie, Johney and Cena, and also the marriage of their eldest child, Jennie to Henry Blackledge are all in the identical 19th century fancy cursive style handwriting indicating they were most probably made by William Cates or his wife Margaret.

All of the remaining entries are in an obviously different handwriting, but appear to be by the same person. The remaining entries are mostly of John and Edith Cates' large family and were probably made by Edith Alice WORDEN Cates, b. 6 Feb 1884, Shopiere, Rock Co., WI, d. 8 Nov 1957, Bassett, Kenosha Co. WI. John and Edith WORDEN Cates are buried in Walworth Cemetery, Walworth, Walworth Co., WI.
