I, John Hales of Jefferson County in the State of Ohio do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say
First, it is my will that my funeral expences and all my just debts be fully paid
Second, I give and bequeath to my Grand Daughter Jane Swinehart One hundred and Fifty Dollars
Third, I give and bequeath to my Grand Son John Miligan Two hundred and Fifty Dollars
Fourth, I give and bequeath to my daughter Polly Jackman my Bureau and Two hundred and Fifty dollars
Fifth, I give and bequeath to my daughter Betsey Mansfield my bedstead bed and bedding and Two hundred and fifty Dollars
Sixth, I give and bequeath to my Son William Hales Two hundred and fifty dollars
Seventh, I give and bequeath to my Son James Hales one hundred and Fifty Dollars
Eighth, I give and bequeath to the Heirs of my son John Hales (deceased) One hundred and fifty dollars and shall be equally divided amongst them
Ninth, I give and bequeath to the Heirs of my son Hugh Hales (deceased) one hundred dollars and shall be equally divided amongst them
Tenth, I give and bequeath to my son Andrew Hales Two hundred dollars
Eleventh, I give and bequeath to my son Robert Hales One hundred dollars
Twelfth, I give and bequeath to my son Moses Hales one hundred and fifty dollars
Thirteenth, I give and bequeath to my Grand Daughter Mary Mansfield Seventy five dollars
Fourteenth, I give and bequeath to my Grand Daughter Sarah Mansfield seventy five dollars
Fifteenth, I give and bequeath to my Great Grand Daughter Martha Maxwell (to wit Daughter of my Grand Daughter Jane Swinehart) Fifty dollars
And lastly I hereby constitute and appoint my son William Hales (of the State of Pennsylvania) and Thomas Mansfield my son by the law to be the Executors for his my last Will and Testament revoking and disannuling all former wills by me made and ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last Will and Testament In Testamony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal this Twenty ninth day of April A.D. one thousand eight hundred & thirty nine.

Term AD 1840 for Jefferson County.
On motion of Daniel L. Collier, Esq. the last Will and Testament of John Hales deceased was brought into Court and James Alexander and John F. Martin two of the subscribing witnesses thereto being qualified say that they saw & heard the testator acknowledge the signing of said Will, that they signed said will as witnesses in the presence of the testator that the testator when he signed said will was of sound mind and memory, of full age & under no restraint thereupon the same is approved and ordered to be recorded with the proof taken.

The above documents, treated in the family genealogy as John Hales I, may be of interest to those with Van Buren County roots.
John Hales I was the grandfather of Thomas Hales (1822-1904) and John Hales III (1821-1904) both of whom are buried in the Center Chapel Cemetery along with many other descendent family members.
