The 1900 Census of Van Buren County, Iowa listed Lee with Simon and May E. Grubbs. He was born in Iowa and attended school 8 months. He could read, write and spoke English.

Lee came to Missouri in about 1911 to the city of Missouri City, Clay County, Missouri where he met and married Evalena Foley. Shortly there after they returned to Ottumwa, Iowa.
Lee and his father didn’t get along, but Lee never talked about it. I believe that after Lee’s mother died and Simon remarried Lee no longer felt at home with his father and new wife. Once Elwood was born in 1910, I believe Lee decided to head south to Missouri. Lee was a farmer, truck driver and carpenter. He raised his family in Clay County, Missouri, Missouri City, Prairie Home and Liberty. Lee loved to fish and as a boy I found myself waist high in the Fishing River. Lee died of heart failure while digging in his backyard garden. He loved his garden and I cannot think of a better for Lee to have died .

Notes for Evalena Foley Grubbs:
Grave side services for Evalena Grubbs was January 20, 1999
Psalm 27:I 4, 7-9, 13-14 these must have been the thoughts of Evalena Foley Grubbs at least the last decade of her life.
During those years from age 97 to 107, that waiting for the goodness of the Lord-waiting with strength and courage-must has occupied a good portion of her private life/personal thoughts.
Of the many times we consider the words of Psalm 23 this seems to be the right moment to bring them front and center again. Five generations strong-you of the Grubbs/Benson linage. Each generation, thought must speak for itself and each person of each generation must speak for himself or herself-if there is to be a reunion of family in eternity in the “forever” of Psalm 23
There are many amazing things about Mrs. Grubbs life
The fact that she lived 107 years-actually she lived 107 years and 5 months in that she was born on August 17, 1891 and died January 15, 1999. The word from Psalm 90 comes to mind.
Amazing that she lived all her life in the Clay County area. She was a third generation Clay Countian. Her parents Henry and Margaret Foley were second generation.. She was the third, and you are adding even more-those of you still living here in Clay County. She was born in Missouri City-only a few miles from where we stand-died here in Liberty at Aston Court only a few blocks from where we stand.
Amazing that she kept her own home until age 102-then finally to Aston Court
She loved her flower garden at the last house she and Lee had built-and the house where George and Evalyn Benson lived a block away and then their house on Jewel where I got to know them
Amazing that she survived in a large family-she was the sixth of 12 children-lived in a cabin where the only bedroom was her parents bedroom in the loft. The children had a blanket for the floor-in the winter, get as close to the stove-in the summer, get close to the door.
One of her significant roles as a child was to carry water. It is hard for us to recall that just her generation ago all water for everything down with water-drinking, cooking, bathing, laundry, cleaning-had to be carried from somewhere-no turning on a faucet, no spigot, no hose.
Mr. And Mrs. Lee Grubbs, Lee and Evalena leave a legacy of hardiness-farmers, some truck driving and carpentry-but mainly farming, then in later years carpentry. Lee did work at the De Soto Kansas in the war effort.
The generations that follow them are the three girls, Margaret Petty, deceased; Ethel Stockburger, here from Hinton Iowa; and Evalyn Benson, here in thought and prayer though physically in Liberty Hospital.
Five grandsons-that’s real gender equality-three daughters, then five grandsons. Finally it became blended with twelve great-grandchildren and sixteen great-great grandchildren.
Evalens’s only work outside the home was as a switchboard operator during those early primitive days of communication by telephone. It had been invented only 15 years before her birth. Bell first work, March 10, 1876. now you can tell your children about the primitive days of e-mail.
Mrs. Grubbs was a member of the old Prairie Home Baptist Church. Prairie Home was a community just north of Liberty-was-the school is gone, the church is gone, She and her daughters were all baptized at the same time in Fishing River. Evalena, Margaret, Ethel and Evalyn-all baptized together, What a wonderful moment for the family and the church family.
A song Evalyn wanted us to sing is “When the roll is called up yonder”. Her Mom hummed it all the time.
Evalena Grubbs Certificate of Death listed Pneumonia as the cause of death on January 15, 1999 at 11:30 p.m.
Evalena Grubbs Social Security Number was 497-26-1013.
