First Woman Voter
Probably the first vote ever cast by a woman in Van Buren county was that of Mrs. Martha DeHart at the school election March 12, 1888, in the independent district of Indian creek, Vernon township. Her vote was counted, although the legislature had not passed the bill allowing women to vote at municipal and school elections.
