VAN BUREN COUNTY AND THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT
In response to a request from the builder of the Washington monument for a stone with a suitable inscription from each of the United States, a suitable stone was quarried on the farm of Moses Root, near Keosauqua. A joint committee of the 2 houses of the Iowa State legislature invited suggestions from several prominent persons as to an appropriate inscription to be carved on the stone. The suggested inscription accepted by the committee came from Enoch East-man and read as follows. "Iowa her affections like the rivers of her borders flow to an inseperable Union." The block of stone from Van Buren County with the above inscription is a part of our Washington monument.
