Nathan Herrington was born October 13, 1808 in Jefferson County, Ohio. He was the eighth child of John Herrington, Sr. a veteran of the Revolutionary War, and Hannah Marshel parents of eleven children. He had a twin brother, Samuel Herrington.
Nathan married Julia Ann Baker on November 28, 1833 in the newly formed Carroll County, Ohio named for the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence, Charles Carroll. She was born on December 24, 1812 daughter of Samuel and Ann Redd Baker.
According to Paul H. Damon, Sr. a Herrington descendant, Nathan was the last family member to own the Herrington Homestead (now listed in the National Historical Places) in Carroll County. After the death of the old veteran in 1862 Nathan and his family headed westward to end up in Van Buren County, Iowa. At least four of their nine children accompanied Nathan and wife Julia to Iowa.
The family should have been well acquainted with the area considering the number of relatives who had preceded them. Younger brother James, 1812-1893, married a lady from Van Buren County named Melvina Mann Cavin (daughter of pioneer John Cavin and Judah Ann Mann) on November 26, 1843. This marriage is on record in the county seat town of Keosauqua. In this same town a young nephew, Moses Hales and wife Mary Jane Emmons had a milling business from 1840 until his death from a flu epidemic in 1845. The US Census of 1850 lists another brother, James, age 38 as residing in Harrisburg Township, Van Buren County.
Nathan and Julias children, four boys and five girls, all born in Carroll County, Ohio, are listed as follows:
Samuel Baker 1835 .
James Harrison 1837 1871
Nathan Redd 1839 1891
Sarah Ann . .
Hannah Jane 1844 1933
Mary Amanda 1848 1923
Martha Barkley . .
Melvina Mann 1851 1890
George William . 1906Four of their daughters were married in Van Buren County. The first being Hannah Jane Jennie to John H. DeFord on December 9, 1865.
The second being Martha Barkley to William B. Shaw on February 16, 1866.
The third being Mary Amanda to Ebenezer Ester Linn on October 23, 1866.
The fourth being Melvina Mann to Stephen Shepperd on September 30, 1872. It is apparent that this daughter was named for her aunt.Nathan is listed in the 1880 census as a retired farmer and a widower, Julia Ann having died on July 11, 1867.
Nathan Herrington died on January 9, 1887 at the age of 78. He and his wife are buried in the Oak Lawn Cemetery at the north edge of Keosauqua, their gravesite is well marked with a stone.
Since this ggg uncle of mine had a number of relatives in VBC and is buried there I felt that some of his descendants might have an interest. As always comments and corrections are welcome.
