Prepared May 20, 1958 at Keosauqua, Iowa by Evelyn Louise Winters House, is a daughter of Cecil Ray Cox Winters; Cecil is a daughter of Ray and Jennie (Cochran) Cox; Ray's parents are Alonzo and Mary Elvira (Hales) Cox; Alonzo's parents are Randolph and Sarah (McIntosh) Cox.
BIOGRAPHY
Cox, Ranolph, farmer, Section 17 of Vernon Township; Post Office, Keosauqua; owns 271 acres of land, valued at $30.00 per acre; born April 7, 1821 in Jefferson County, Indiana. In 1827, parents moved to Sangamon County, Illinois; he went to Menard County in 1838; while there he learned the trade of stone and brick mason.
Enlisted during the Mexican War in Company F, 4th Illinois Volunteers in May 1846; was under Brigadier General Shields, in Taylor's army; while below Matamoras was taken sick, finally discharged and returned home via New Orleans and the Mississippi River.
On June 1847, came to this county [Van Buren, Iowa]. Married Sarah McIntosh on April 22, 1849; she was born February 10, 1826 in Tazewell County, Virginia; [Sarah with her parents George and Isabell (Brewster) McIntosh, came to Van Buren County, Iowa in 1838].
Randolph and Sarah Cox have nine children [all born in Van Buren County, Iowa]: Juliette, Alonzo, Harvey R., Argus, Clarinda, Florence, Eudora, Carrie and Alice. Mr. [Randolph] Cox settled on his present frame in 1849. Member of Methodist Church; Independent.

In June 1883 with his family, Randolph and Sarah Cox moved to Carthage, Missouri, one year later moved to Mountain Grove, Missouri. "Randolph Cox bought land that at the time was adjacent to Mountain Grove, the tract lying across the railway from what is now the State Poultry Station. The house into which the family moved was destroyed by fire but the barn and the stone 'milk house' still stand and are among the oldest buildings in Mountain Grove. (From the obituary of Carrie Cox Cassil in 1945).
On April 22, 1894 Randolph and Sarah Cox celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary at which time "all the children, separated in some instances for many years were gathered in their accustomed places in the old home to meet an unbroken family for the last time on earth." [Sarah Cox died the following june 7, 1894 in Mountain Grove, Missouri].
A grandson Don F. Anson, son of Flarious and Clarinda Cox Anson died two months later on the same day his grandmother Sarah (McIntosh) Cox died. He was 2 years, 3 months and 2 days old. Don and his "maq-ma," as he called her, were very dear to each other and during her long illness it was his daily custom to go to her bedside, kiss and hug her and ask, "How is maq-ma, morning". Sarah McIntosh Cox had four brothers, Thomas Brewster McIntosh born 1817 and died 1897 in Vernon Township, Van Buren Cty., Iowa, married Rebecca Ellen Fitzgerald and had four sons and 4 daughters (see their obituary in this Van Buren Cty. Web site; James, George S., and ? ; two sisters, Isabel and Elizabeth.
Randolph and Sarah (McIntosh) Cox nine children were born in Van Buren County, Iowa.
Juliette Cox 1850-1929 married Nathan R. Thomas, lived in Emporia, Kansas; eight children.
Alonzo Cox 1852-1916 married Mary Elvira Hales and resided all their lives in Van Buren County, near Center Chapel area and both are buried in the Center Chapel cemetery. Eleven children. Mary Elvira Hales Cox is the daughter of Thomas William Hales, [see his Biography on this Van Buren Cty. web site].
Harvey Reese Cox 1854-1919 married Anna Carstine Weller, lived in Tacoma, Washington, was a principal/superintendent of schools 35 years, Pierce Co., Wash. Three children.
Argus Cox 1856-1935 married Emma Starr; Argus was a Judge of Missouri Judicial Circuit; 1901 lived in Mountain Grove, MO and resided in Springfield, Mo in 1916. Two sons.
Clarinda Cox 1858-1934 married Flarious Anson lived in Willow Springs, Missouri. Flarious was also born in Van Buren County in 1854; the Anson family were amoung the leading citizens of Van Buren County. Flarious signed Randolph Cox's papers for pension in 1887. Five children.
Florence Cox 1861/62- married Lewis Goos lived in Waynesville and Clinton, Illinois. Three children.
Eudora Cox 1863- married William Frye and in 1916 they lived in Norman or Okalahoma City, OK. Two children.
Carrie Cox 1865-1945 married J.Max Cassil of Mountain Grove, Missouri; he was a photographer and possibly owned J.M. Cassil Photos in Mountain Grove, MO buried in Mountain Grove, MO. Four children. After Mr. Cassil's death in 1921, Carrie re-entered her teaching profession.
Alice Cox 1867 lived in Festus, Missouri 1888 where she taught school, married ? Ellis in 1901 lived in Mountain Grove, Mo; 1916 lived in Shawnee, OK. Two children.
I am related as Randolph (1821-1901) and Sarah McIntosh Cox (1836-1894) are my great, great grandparents on the Cox side and Thomas William Hales (1822-1904) is my great, great grandfather on the Hales side.
This biography is posted in a long-time continuation effort of trying to locate the Hales-Cox descendants, as well as the Hales-Cox cousins are trying to identify and locate descendants of the professional photo 8 1/2X11 taken in Keosauqua, Iowa at the Thomas William Hales residence between the period of 1891- 1900.
