Naomi Roberta Johnston was born 16 September 1912 to Rueben S. Johnston and his wife Dessie Roberts Johnston. Her birth took place at the
family home north west of Birmingham, in Jefferson County, Iowa. She attended country school, first at Crum (2 years) and then at Eagle (Liberty
township) (6 years). She went to Birmingham High School, where she graduated in June of 1930. On 25 December 1930, she and Merle E. Nelson
wed. This union produced five children, Robert Merle, Desda Grace, Carol Ann, Richard Van and Larry Lynn. Roberta and Merle separated in
1940 and for the next ten years she farmed and provided for her family with the help of her sister Mary Elson, Aunt Ethel and Uncle Glenn Williams.
In 1949 she married Harry Emmett Mahon. They had one son, Alan Lee.
They continued to operate a farm south west of Stockport until 1963, when they move to a farm just south of Birmingham, Iowa.
After retiring from farming she and Harry resided in Fairfield until Roberta’s health declined and she went to stay with her son Richard, in WestMemphis, AR.
Roberta is survived by her husband, Harry, and sons, Robert, Richard, Larry, Alan and sister Mary.
Roberta passed away on 11 December 1997 in West Memphis, AR. Viewing was at the Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, Iowa from 5pm to9pm Saturday, 13 Dec 97. Services were held at the Pedrick Funeral Home at 2pm on 14 Dec 97. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery in
Birmingham, Iowa.
