DOROTHY ELIZABETH FORBES BOLT GRANDEL

Dorothy Elizabeth Forbes Bolt Grandel was born at Saguache, Colorado on November 30, 1906. She lived her early life there in Colorado and attended school at the Alexander Grammar School. In 1917, after the death of her father, she moved with her family to Southeastern Iowa. She attended grade school at Winchester and high school in Birmingham. After the family moved to California, she attended Covina High School, where she graduated in 1925. Following graduation, Dorothy married Ben Bolt. They had two children, Doris Evelyn and Donald Rufe. They lived first in Covina and then on the Chapman Ranch out near Charter Oak. Later, Dorothy and the children moved to Covina, first on Third Street and then on Center Street. On June 10, 1943 Dorothy married Bill Grandel.

Dorothy had various positions in her work career. She served as a waitress for many important dinners and parties in and around Covina. She worked at the Farm Labor Office, at Bobbie’s Dress Shop, for the U.S. Army Ordinance during the war, and later at Aero Jet General in Azusa. In whatever she did Dorothy was a loyal and faithful employee. Her husband, Bill, held various jobs, the last of which was as a driver for the studios in Hollywood.

Dorothy was a member of the Eastern Star Lodge. In her later years she studied painting and painted many beautiful pictures, which she generously shared with her children and sister.

Her outstanding attribute was her devotion and dedication to the family. She worked very hard to maintain her own little family in spite of adversities and made her place a home for her brother Mont, sister Bernardine, and her mother. Her home on Center Street continues to be the family home today.
