Mrs. Stilwell-Hill was born around Douds. She was the daughter of Sam and Martha (Crane) Slutz of Douds. She was a relative to the Douds family, thus a Mayflower descendant. She was a one-room school teacher for awhile. She graduated from the Methodist college in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. She had 5 children- Harold,Patti,Sally, Vivian and Sherry Stilwell. As well as several grandchildren- including myself. She loved Douds and Van Buren County. Her 1st husband-Roscoe W. Stilwell was a relative to WWII's 4 star General "Vinegar" Joe Stilwell. She told me the General had visited Douds shortly after WWII. She lived in the first house built in Douds. She also lived in the 12 room- Railroad Hotel, that she had placed on the National Historical List in 1977, of which I saw the copper-bronze plaque. The hotel is no longer there. It set just South of the gas station there. She lived her life with dignity and respected all.She was a true lady.
