Leila M. Whitmarsh, 95, of Dubuque died of a heart ailment April 9 at Bethany House there. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at United Church of Christ Congregational in Creston, of which she was a member. Private family burial was held Thursday at Graceland Cemetery there.
Mrs. Whitmarsh was born in Vesta, Neb., and had lived in Creston 63 years before moving to Dubuque in 1998. She was a rural schoolteacher and had taught with the Orient-Macksburg school system before retiring. She was a member of the Iowa Retired Teachers Association, the National Education Association, Mayflower Friendship and First United Church of Christ in Creston and a charter member of Creston Women’s Club. She was a chairwoman with the American Cancer Society and had served on the Creston school board.
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Williams of Dubuque; a brother, David Kirkpatrick of Grand Rapids, Mich.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, George.
The family will receive friends following memorial services at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to her church. Coen-Beaty-Pearson Family Funeral Service in Creston is handling arrangements.
