Floyd Wallace Nesbit, 78, of Creston, passed away Saturday, October 6, 2012, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 10 at Powers Funeral Home in Creston, with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
A Masonic service will follow visitation at 7 pm. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 11 at Salem Lutheran Church in Creston. Burial will follow at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.
Floyd Wallace Nesbit was born June 12, 1934, in Waterloo, Iowa, to Marie Augusta (Henze) and Willis Russell Nesbit. He graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1952 and attended the University of Iowa, graduating with a doctor of dental surgery (DDS) degree in 1958. After graduation, Floyd joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed in San Diego, California.
On November 8, 1958, Floyd married Janet Evelyn Skeie at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames, Iowa. They had two children. After briefly living in San Diego, the couple settled in Creston in 1960. Floyd was a practicing dentist there until his retirement in 2001.
Much of his adult life, Floyd was very involved in the Masons. He was a Past Master of Crest City Lodge #522 in Creston as well as a long-time secretary there. Floyd was a Past High Priest of Al Gabil Chapter #121 Royal Arch Masons, Hiram Council #30 Royal and Select Masters, and Bethany Commandery #29 Knight Templar. He was also a member of Za-Ga-Zig Shrine.
In 2007, Floyd received the highest award Iowa Masonry can bestow, the T.S. Parvin award. In September 2012, he was honored by receiving the Knight of the Royal Arch award and the Knight Commander of the Temple award.
Floyd was a past president of the Creston Kiwanis, past Exalted Ruler of the Creston Elks Lodge, and past board member of the Creston Chamber of Commerce and Creston United Way. He was a life member of the Iowa Dental Association and avid Iowa Hawkeye Fan.
Floyd is survived by his wife of 53 years, Janet Evelyn; children Scott Nesbit, Sioux Falls, SD, and Susan (Paul) Nesbit-Fisher, West Des Moines; four grandchildren, Sara Nesbit, Justin Nesbit, Sydney Fisher and Will Fisher; and brother Harry Nesbit, Waterloo. He was proceeded in death by his parents. Memorial gifts may be made to the Crest City Lodge #522 or Salem Lutheran Church in Creston.
