Harold Wayne Mateer was born on Wednesday; June 8, 1921 in Afton; Iowa to John H. and Ella (Thompson) Mateer. He grew up in the area of his birth until 1934 when his family moved to Des Moines; Polk County, Iowa where he graduated high school.
He enlisted in the Army Air Force in February 1942 and served our country in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theaters. After the war he returned to Los Angeles; Los Angeles County, California where he was employed in the restaurants at the Mayfair Hotel, Mayflower Hotel and Alexandria Hotel. He moved back to Des Moines, Iowa in 1970 and later moved to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown; Marshall County, Iowa.
On Saturday; December 20, 1986, Harold was united in marriage to Gladys Lane. The couple lived in Des Moines for a time before returning to the Iowa Veterans Home. Harold Wayne Mateer, age 85, of the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown passed away on Saturday; March 24, 2007, at the V.A. Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
Those left to mourn his passing are a step daughter, Pam (Gary) Quinnett of Des Moines, Iowa. A step son, Norman Lane, also of Des Moines, Iowa and a step grandson, Loyd (Terrell) Quinnett of Ankeny; Polk County, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gladys and a sister, Mrs. Richard Horst. May they rest in peace. Public visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until noon on Tuesday; March 27, 2007 at the Iowa Veterans Home Chapel in Marshalltown, Iowa.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday; March 28, 2007 at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Afton; Iowa with burial to follow. Graveside military rites will be provided by the John B. Parks VFW Post #8882, Afton.
