Funeral services for Clarence Loren Ashburn, 70, of Knoxville, who died May 24, at his home, were held May 27, 1998, at the First United Methodist Church in Knoxville. Burial was at Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville. The Rev. Martha Ward officiated at the services. Music was provided by Jim Kidder, organist.

Pallbearers were Jeff Smith, Dave Amos, Gary Cowman, Joe Brown, Dick Reed, and Myron Thompson. Honorary bearers were Oren Dow, Chuck Day, Jerry Weldon, Paul Smith, Dick Havier, Marion Dykstra, and Dude Hoehns.

Clarence was born March 22, 1928, in Kirksville, Mo., the son of Leland and Clustie McDowell Ashburn. He was raised in the Lamoni and Davis County areas, and graduated from Lamoni High School in 1946.

He was united in marriage to Elsie Coffman on June 8, 1947, in Tingley. The couple moved to Knoxville in 1958. Elsie died in 1973. He married Irene Paulus in Knoxville, on February 4, 1977.

He was a Moorman feed sales representative for 28 years, retiring in 1990. During his retirement years, he bought numerous houses and repaired them as rental properties. He was an excellent carpenter and enjoyed electrical and plumbing work. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Oriental Lodge #61 A.F. & A.M., and the Order of Eastern Star.

He was preceded in death by his father; his first wife, Elsie; a son, Dwight Loren; and a brother, Darrell.

He is survived by his mother of Diagonal; his wife, Irene; two daughters, Lynda Burton, and Cheryl McGinnis, both of Knoxville; three step-sons, Gary Paulus and Casey Paulus, both of Afton, and Mark Paulus of Loveland, Colo.; a step-daughter, Vickie Rice of Afton; two brothers, John of Jeffersonville, Ind., and Leland of Ackworth; three grandchildren, and three step- grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa. Arrangements were made by Bybee and Davis Funeral Home in Knoxville.
