Hilding R. Shum, 88, of Creston formerly of Ringgold Co., passed away
May 20, 2008, at the Greater Regional Medical Center in Creston.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 24, 2008, at the Powers
Funeral Home Junction Hwys. 34 & 25 Creston. Rev. Clark Finehout and
Rev. Tom Woodin will officiate. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery,
south of Creston. Open visitation will be 1-8:00 pm Thursday, with family
receiving friends from 6-8:00 pm at Powers Funeral Home in Creston.
Military rites are by the Theodore J. Martins Post 1797, Creston, VFW.
Memorials may be directed to Greater Regional Hospice House and
the McKinley Park Restoration. Online condolences may be given under

Hilding Raymond Shum, son of Grace (Spring) Shum and John
C. Shum, was born on Jan. 5, 1920, in Burle County, S.D. He was
raised by his Uncle Claude and Aunt Lena Shum. He moved to Iowa
in 1937 and purchased land in Ringgold Co in 1940. In 1942, he was
drafted into the United States Army. He served during WWII in the
South Pacific area under Gen. Douglas MacArthur. On April 9, 1949,
he married Evelyn Arlene Black in Clearfield and they were blessed
with 3 daughters; Linda Lea, Janet Eileen and Sandra Lynn. Hilding
farmed in Ringgold County from 1948 to 1978, until retiring and
moving to Creston. They enjoyed traveling and visiting family and
friends, camping and spending winters in Arizona and Texas, where
they acquired many new friends. Evelyn died on June 30, 1995. On
June 9, 1996, he married Florence Frantz in Creston. In 1999, they
moved to Mission, Texas. In 2005, they moved to the Summit House
in Creston. Hilding was a member of the First United Methodist
Church, Creston VFW and Disabled American Veterans. He was a
62 year member of the American Legion, 60 year VFW member, a
50 year member of the Masonic Lodge and 50 year member of the
Order of the Eastern Star of Clearfield.
Survivors include his wife, Florence Shum of Creston; three
daughters, Linda (husband Bill) Clark of Creston, Janet (husband
Jeff) Haley of Grinnell, and Sandra (husband Dave) Anderson of
Rapid City, S.D.; 8 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and
several nieces and nephews. Hilding was preceded in death by
his parents, his first wife Evelyn, six brothers and three sisters.
