DEATH OF J. D. THOMAS

N. W. Rowell received a telegram on Monday from Mrs. J. D. Thomas, of South Omaha, announcing the death of her husband from phneumonia on Sunday, and stating that the remains would reach Afton that (Monday) night. Preparations were at once made to receive and inter them. On the arrival of the train, the casket was taken to Syp's undertaking rooms where they remained during the night, while the family was conducted to the residence of Mr. Rowell where they passed the night. The funeral took place Tuesday.

Rev. Collins, of the M. E. church, accompanied the cortege to the cemetery and the remains were escorted by the G. A. R. post of which order deceased was an honored member. The burial services were according to the ritual of the order. Mr. Thomas brought the body of his father from Elkhart, Ind., to Afton for burial on Wednesday of last week. His father's brother had died at the same place, about the same time. At the time of his father's burial he was sick, barely able to travel, and the fatigue of watching and traveling through which he had passed was to much for his strength. In less than a week from the time he was here, his lifeless form was brought back for burial. J. D. Thomas was at one time a citizen of Union county occupying a farm in New Hope township. He was elected county superintendent, serving two terms. Afterward, he engaged in business, removing after while to Shenandoah and finally to South Omaha. He held the rank of captain during the war and was at one time commander of the G. A. R. post at Shanandoah.

Among the handsome floral offering on the casket was a pillow inscribed "G.A.R." testifying to the esteem in which he was held by the order.

The bereaved farmily are assured of the deepest sympathy from the people of this county in their distress.
