Frances Mae Balius, the daughter of Franklin and Eva Marie (Blair) Ritter, was born on July 15, 1922, on a farm north of Afton, in Union County, Iowa. Frances entered eternal rest on April 19, 2010, at Southern Hills Specialty Care Center, in Osceola, Iowa, at the age of eighty-seven years, nine months, and five days.

Frances was raised in the Afton area and graduated from Afton High School. She taught country school for one year following high school graduation. Frances has lived in Jasper County and various other towns. She lived in West Des Moines from 1957-1973, farmed in Wayne County, and lived in Decatur County.

On November 24, 1940, Frances married Harry William Balius in Grant City, Missouri. After Frances married she was a farm wife and homemaker. She worked at Mary Ann’s Pie Shop in Des Moines and also worked at Dahl’s in West Des Moines for several years. Frances loved her family and enjoyed working along side Harry on the farm.

Left to cherish Frances’ memory are her children: Jeanne Argenta, Pleasant Hill, Iowa; Wanda (husband Bill) Hickey, Minburn, Iowa; William Lee (wife Sally) Balius, West Des Moines, Iowa; Chuck (wife Chris) Balius, West Des Moines, Iowa; and Joyce (husband Steve) Golly, Weldon, Iowa; Thirteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; her Sisters-in-law: Lois Ritter, Ankeny; and Louise Ritter; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Preceding Frances in death were her parents; her husband Harry in October, 2006; four brothers; and one sister.
