Obituaries Powers Funeral Home

Gary L. Austin, 66, of Afton, died Monday, January 30, 2012 at the Greater Regional Hospice Home in Creston. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 3, 2012 at the Powers Funeral Home 612 N. Dodge in Afton. Pastor Dwayne Henrichs will officiate. Burial will be at the Greenlawn Cemetery, east of Afton. Open visitation from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Powers Funeral Home in Afton. Memorial to the Greater Regional Hospice Home or to the family. Online condolences may be given under the obituary category at www.powersfh.com.

Gary Lewis Austin, son of Forrest Marion Austin and Catherine Janice (Coe) Austin, was born Oct. 5, 1945 near Peru, Iowa. He graduated in 1963 from East Union High School in Afton. On July 6, 1965, Gary married Alice Wilma Brown in Shannon City, Iowa. They lived and worked in the Afton area all of their married life. Gary worked as a welder for Wellman's Dynamics, from 1965 until retiring in 2007. Additionally, Gary raised cattle. He loved antiques, and collected tractors, pumps, guns, arrowheads and other artifacts, just to name of few of his interests. He was an avid reader and enjoyed working on genealogy. Gary was a member of the F.O.E Eagles Club #1398 in Creston, the Iowa Archeology Society, the GMP Union and was a former member of the National Rifleman Association.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Austin of Afton; two daughters, Sheila (husband Allen) Hayes of Crystal, Minn. and April Austin (significant other Harold Dalton) of Afton; his son, Robert (wife Cindy) Austin of Afton; five grandchildren, Julie Hayes, Josh Bohlken, Brittany and Ashley Malone and Robi Austin; two brothers, Marion Austin and Alan (wife Kathy) Austin, both of Afton; five sisters, Kathryn (husband Gary) Siddens of Afton, Beth Gray of Winterset, Virginia Roberts of Ozark, Mo., Nancy (husband Lanny) Hofmeister of Creston and Mary (husband Wayne) Hill of Afton; a brother-in-law, Dennis Larimer of Apple Valley, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Shirley (husband Allen) Kirk of Lorimor; his dog, Lady, and many other family and friends.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, his father & mother-in-law, Pete and Grace Brown, a sister, Linda Larimer, four brothers-in-law, Chuck Gray, Dick Roberts, Stephen Eckels and Art Brown, two sisters-in-law, Barb Brown and Barbara Brown.
