Toland, Stephen S. –
Stephen S. Toland son of William J. and Eliza Toland, was born in McDonough County, Ill. May 31, 1849 and died at the hospital in Iowa City August 10, 1935 at the age 86 years 2 months and 9 days.

On Oct. 19, 1872 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Pierce. To them were born six children, 3 sons and 3 daughters—Charles F. deceased, Mrs. Josephine Peak, Mrs. Alta Bowers, Earl R. Toland and Mrs. Elsie Locke all of Kent and Albert of Glendale, Calif. There are also living 16 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren . His wife, aged and frail, survives him.

On May 12 1864 he enlisted with Company I 137, Ill., Infantry. His first active engagement was in the battle of Memphis Aug 21, 1864. He united with the Union City Christian church in 1897. He was the first rural mail carrier out of Kent, established in 1901. Was later postmaster appointed in 1907. He was one of the early mayors of Kent, and a member of the I. O. O. F. Lodge. He was the last commander of Kent J. P. Shively Post, while his old comrade Geo. W. La Master the only surviving member of that one time strong post, was the last mustering officer.

Mr. Toland resided in the Kent community continuously, with the exception of one year in Nebraska, for a period of 59 years.

Funeral services were held at the Toland home in Kent, Monday, August 12, at 2:30, in charge of the Rev. I. G. Randels of Lenox Church of Christ. Burial was made in the cemetery three miles south of Kent.
