Madden, Edmund –
Edmund Madden, son of Reuben and Mary Madden was born in Union Co., Iowa on October 25, 1856 [tombstone says 1855] and passed away at his home in Lenox August 15, 1931 at the age of 75 years, 10 months and 20 days.

His early life was spent amid the pioneer surroundings of this community where working for his father, Reuben Madden, who conducted a store at Madden’s Grove east of Lenox, the nearest railway station was Ottumwa on the east and Savannah, Missouri on the south. The merchandise sold at the store were freighted from those points, and those were the nearest points of shipments for cattle, hogs and other products. He was one of the pioneers of this community and was the first white child born in Platte township, union county.

In 1874 Mr. Madden moved to Lenox and engaged in the mercantile business there until 1914. In 1877 [Aug. 28, 1878] he was married to [Charity] Alice Greenland of Batavia, Iowa. To this union five children were born, a daughter Carrie, who died in infancy, two sons, Millard F. who resides in Virginia and John M. of Lenox and two daughters, Mrs. James Locke of Bedford and Mrs. Jay E. Hughes of Lenox.

During the pastorate of Rev. Gibson, Mr. Madden united with the Methodist church of Lenox and continued the membership to this church until his death.

On Friday evening he was apparently in his usual health and retired at the usual hour. In early morning hours and without sign of his departure he passed in natural sleep into the quietude and serenity of death.

He was a loving and affectionate husband and father and was always interested in the affairs of the town and community.

He is survived by his wife who has been his devoted companion for more than fifty years and four children, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Lenox on August 17, conducted by Rev. F. L. Shepherd, pastor of the church, assisted by Rev. R. Tally of the Bedford Methodist church. A quartet composed of Miss Adah Butler, Mrs. Winnie Haigler, Dr. W. H. Cash and Mr. Earl Beadel furnished the music. Interment was made in the Lenox cemetery.
