Bernita E. Siddens, 96, of Afton, died Monday, July 21, 2008 at the Afton Care Center in Afton. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at theUnited Methodist Church in Afton. Pastor Dwayne Henrichs and Rev. Jim Morris officiating. Interment will in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Afton. Memorial to the Greater Regional Hospice in Creston. Online condolences may be given under the obituary category at www.powersfh.com

Bernita Ellen Siddens, daughter of Elmer Edwin Ames and Electa Justice, was born in New Hope Township, Union County on November 11, 1911. She graduated in 1930 from Afton High School. Bernita was a lifelong Afton resident. On January 16, 1942, she married Walter "Doc" Siddens at Grant City, Mo.

Bernita served the community of Afton as the City Clerk for 17 years. She retired from her position as city clerk in 1976. Bernita was also the Greenlawn Cemetery Secretary for 25 years, serving until she retired in 1986. She was a member of the Afton United Methodist Church, VFW Auxiliary in Afton and Creston, and the Afton Women's Club.

Bernita is survived by one brother in-law, Bryan Recknor of Des Moines, two sisters-in-law: Vi Ames of Danville, Ill. and Rowena Anderson of Phoenix, Ariz; nieces and nephews: Myrna McGrath of Avoca, Dennis Bailey and Janet Bailey, both of Creston, Harold & Cheryl Henrichs, Kenny & Thelma Ames and Curt & Marilyn Ames, all of Branson, Mo., Allen & Mary Ann Ames of Sedona, Ariz., Martha Peichl and Ellen Recknor, both of Des Moines, Linda Brown of Washington, Dr. Marty Brown of New York, N.Y., Dr. Ronald & Jackie Hill of Star, ID, Gary & Kate Siddens & Richard Siddens, all of Afton, other nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Walter "Doc" in 1967, three brothers: Carl Ames, Ward Ames, and Leonard Ames; and four sisters: Leona Hill, Florence Bailey, Enid Brown, and Lois Recknor.
