Harold Malcolm Amos, 89, of Afton, died Wed. Oct. 5, 2011 at the V.A. Medical Center in Des Moines. Memorial graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 10, 2011 at the Greenlawn Cemetery, east in Afton. Rev. Jim Morris and Pastor Joel Sutton will officiate. Military graveside rites by the John B. Parks Post #8882, Afton V.F.W. Memorials are to the Creston Animal Rescue Effort (C.A.R.E.). Online condolences may be given at www.powersfh.com.

Harold Malcolm Amos, son of William Rex Amos and Iva Pearl (Moon) Amos, was born on Feb. 18, 1922 in De Nova, Colo. He graduated from Afton High School in 1939. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1939, and was stationed in the Philippians. He was captured in the Philippines on April 9, 1942 and as a Prison of War, was forced to be part of the Bataan Death March and imprisoned in the Cabanatuan Prison Camp. He was freed on Jan. 30, 1945 and later discharged.

On Oct. 22, 1945, Malcolm married Loraine Marie Nielsen in Afton. He lived and worked all of his married life in the Afton area. He operated the Amos Super Value Grocery store in Afton from 1945 to 1977. Malcolm served as the Afton Mayor and on the Afton City Council for many years. He also served as a Union County Supervisor, Afton Fire Chief, on the East Union School Board, the Three Mile Lake Commission, the Afton Housing Development Board and the Veterans Affairs Board. Malcolm was a member of the Afton Masonic Lodge, the American Legion, the Afton Veterans of Foreign Wars; the F.O.E. Eagles Lodge #1398 of Creston, the Disabled American Veterans and the Lakeshore Golf and Country Club of Afton,
Malcolm served as the State Commander of the American Defenders of the Bataan & Corregidor for several years.

Survivors include his wife, Loraine Amos of Afton; two sons, Mark (wife Lee) Amos of Fairfield, Calif. and Harold Malcolm "Mick" Amos, Jr. of Afton; four daughters, Blythe (husband John) Shively of Lafayette, Ind., Cynthia (husband Mark) Williams of Afton, Ia., Michelle Lynne (husband Michael) Anderson of Shenandoah, Ia. and Melissa Jane Amos of Afton; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and his dog Henry, who was his faithful companion.

Malcolm was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Lanae Hagen in 2001; a granddaughter, Michelle Diane Hagen; two sisters, Roberta McDonald and Mary Ann Smith and a brother, William Rex Amos, Jr.
