Merle R. Wilson, 82, of Arispe died Aug. 24, 2000, at the Afton Care Center.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Aug. 28 at Powers Funeral Home, 601 New York Avenue. The Rev. William Richardson, pastor of the Assembly of God Church in Afton, will officiate the service. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery, south of Shannon City. There is open visitation noon to 9 p.m. Sunday and the family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home in Creston. Memorials may be directed to the Gideons International Bible Society.

Mr. Wilson was born Dec. 2, 1917, near Arispe in Union County to Harry S. and Ruth L. (Roberts) Wilson. He graduated from Arispe High School in 1934. On Feb. 6, 1938, he married Vivian Marie Elliot in Mount Ayr and she died June 9, 1997. He was a lifetime resident of Sand Creek Township where he farmed. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Afton, Union County, Farm Bureau and former member of the Gideons International Bible Society. He served on the Arispe School Board.

Survivors include three sons, David Merle Wilson of Littleton, Colo., Donald (wife Jeanne) Wilson of Afton and Steve (wife Barrie) Wilson of Lexington, Ky; a daughter, Debby (husband Brent) Lacina of Shannon City; two sisters-in-law, Esther (husband Lyle) Fluckey of Arispe and Ruth Harmer of Carlisle; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law Lillian House and brother-in-law Leo Harmer.
