ORIEL SMITH DIES AT 70

Oriel R. Smith, 70, of Creston, died at the Greater Community hospital here at 4 p.m. Friday. He had been ill for a week.

His funeral was held at 2 p.m. today at the Coen funeral home here. Steve Cate of the Church of Christ officiate. Music was by Mrs. Jean Boyd, organist, and the Church of Christ Singers. Casket bearers were Ed Trenkle, Jack Stream, Wayne Cornelison, Willie Friehage, Malcom Connon and Bill Mathis. Honorary pallbearers were L. R. Edrington, Glen Herzog, Curtis Coghlan and Bill Pitt. Burial was in Graceland cemetery. His family was at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Oriel Randall Smith was born at Curtis, Nebr., April 11, 1909. He was the son of Homer and Emma Abell Smith. He was married at Winterset, Nov. 13, 1928, to Eula M. Cornelison, who survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Shirley Anderson of Creston; three sons, Don Smith of Dallas Center, Kenneth Smith of Creston and Carroll Smith in the U. S. Navy at Virginia Beach, Va.; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandson; two sisters, Vada Smith in California and Mrs. Frances Brown of Council Bluffs; and a brother, Robert Smith of Mitchell. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

Mr. Smith came to Creston from Curtis, Nebr., in 1920. He was employed by Rex Coal and Ice for 25 years and be the Creston street department for 12 years before retiring in 1970.
