"Johnny Green" was buried on a bluff overlooking the Iowa River on the grounds of the Iowa Veteran's Home in Marshalltown. The river forms the north boundary of the IVH grounds.
The exact location of his burial is unknown but only guessed at today because whatever marker that might have been placed there originally was later lost over time. The bluffs along the river have eroded some also so perhaps the actual grave no longer exists.
Many many years ago a grave-dowser was brought to the area of the bluff to try to "find" his grave by "witching" for it with a forked stick like folks try to do to locate water to find where to dig for wells etc. A spot was selected by the dowser and marked with out stones in an outline of a grave and a plaque now marks that site. There is a walkway and park bench close to this spot which is to the north behind the house that serves as the superintendant's residence.
Not far too away from this supposed gravesite, which is not part of the IVH cemetery, a very large memorial marker with Johnny Green's name engraved on it has been placed near one of the entrance roads that leads into the IVH cemetery.
The east entrance to the IVH grounds off Jerome and Ninth streets will take you to both the large stone marker and the dowsed gravesite.
