MARTIN CARY LEWIS DEAD
(January 21, 1844 - December 15, 1916)

Former Resident of Toledo Passes Away in California.

Tama friends are in receipt of the news of the death of Martin Cary Lewis, which occurred on the evening of December 15 at the home of his brother, Jesse M. Lewis, at Ontario, California. Mr. Lewis was a bachelor and went out to California with his brother and family some nine years ago when they moved from Toledo, where they had made their home for fourteen years. The late Mr. Lewis was born in New York and his father brought him and the other members of his family to Iowa, locating near Davenport, and in 1865 moving to Helena in this county. He made his home for a time in Ida County and moved with his brother to Toledo and lived with him there throughout his residence in that city. He had been in failing health for over a year and died at the age of 72 years, 10 months and 24 days. His pastor preached a sympathetic funeral sermon from the text taken from Acts 7:60: “He fell asleep.”
