RESIDENT, DIES

Miss Caroline "Carrie" Schafer, 85, of Tama, died Tuesday, Sept. 21st, at an Iowa City hospital following a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 23rd, at Harrison funeral home in Tama with the Rev. Paul A. DeVos officiating. Organ music was provided by Mrs. Lloyd Strine.

Pallbearers were Carl Lester, Lester Ryman, Roy Shaffer, Arnold Vileta, Pearle Niswander and Charles Turbett. The Tama Rebekah Lodge also conducted services. Interment was in Oak Hill cemetery.

Born June 28th, 1880, near Sheridan in Poweshiek county, she was the daughter of Nicholas and Anna E. Franciscus Schafer. As a young woman she moved to Tama with her parents. She worked as telephone operator for a number of years until her parents became ill and she then cared for them until their deaths.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Edward G. and Walter Schafer; and a sister, Mrs. Otto (Kate) Broders.

Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews: Merle M. and Forrest (Sam) Schafer and Mrs. Kenneth (Mabel) McFate of Tama; Elmer Broders, Mrs. Elmer (Myrtle) Baustian, and Mrs. Raymond (Etta) Schultz, all of Grinnell; Mrs. George (Eva) Hanson, Decorah; Clifford Schafer, Canova, S.D.; Mrs. Louis (Mildred) Tevault and Glenn Schafer of Phillips S.D.; Mrs. Henry (Alice) Harvey, Plainview, Nebr.; and Mrs. Amiel (Marian) Moyer, Toledo.
