MEMORIAL CARD:
Bernard Raymond Novak was born August 19, 1927 in Chelsea, IA, the son of Joseph and Mary Matula Novak. After the death of his parents, a brother and a sister in a car train accident in 1941 in Clutier, he was raised by Leo and Agnes Pusteoska. He received his elementary education at Howard #1 through 8th grade and graduated from Toledo High School in 1945. After his schooling he entered the United States Army where he served his country from 1945-1947. After his discharge he was united in marriage to Doris Novotny on October 28, 1948 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in rural Clutier. Bernard and Doris made their home farming on the family farm nine miles north of Toledo. Bernard's death came at his home on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at the age of 82 years surrounded by his family after fighting a courageous battle with cancer.He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and later St. Paul Catholic Church in Traer. He was an active member and Past Commander for the Kubik Finch Post #142. He also was a 3rd District Commander and a member of the 40/8 of Marshalltown. He was a member of the Tama Toledo Fraternal Order of Eagles #2828 where he had served as Past President and Trustee, and served as bar manager for many years, a member of KD Lodge #130 and Catholic Order of Foresters.
After his retirement from farming in 1998 he enjoyed playing cards, fishing, gardening and spending time with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Doris in 1995, brothers Richard, and Jerome and a sister Margaret. He is survived by his chiildren: Ron Novak of Chicago, IL, John (Mary) Novak of Traer, IA, Tom (Nikki) Novak of Toledo, IA, Anita (Dennis) Bohnstengel of Rollingstne, MN and Robert Novak of Des Moines, IA, 6 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. A brother Donald (Dorothy) Novak of Waterloo and a very special friend Vernis Williams of Waterloo, IA. His witty sense of humor will be missed.
