OBITUARY

ALVIN L. OHRT

Memorial services for Alvin L. Ohrt, 75, Marshalltown, formerly of Toledo, were held Wednesday, Dec. 6, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Marshalltown, officiated by Dr. William Spencer. Inurnment will be a private family service at Woodlawn Cemetery, Toledo.

He died Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at the Iowa Veterans Home. A memorial fund has been established in his name to Our Savior Lutheran Church.

Born Nov. 11, 1925, in Mt. Auburn, he was the son of Theodore and Freda (Lane) Ohrt. He was raised and educated in this area. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II and received his honorable discharge on Aug. 28,1943. He was a graduate of Municipal Clerks Institute I, II, III, at Iowa State University in the field of Science and Technology.

On Feb. 27, 1975, he was united in marriage to Gloria (Appelgate) Wulff at SI. Matthew Lutheran Church in Galena, IL. He operated a grocery and general Store in Dinsdale before becoming Tama County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections, where he served for 20 years. He also owned and operated Ohrt's Food Corner in Toledo. He was City Administrator of Strawberry Point and retired as an abstracter in Bloomfield where he and his wife, Gloria, owned Davis County Abstract.

He had been a resident at the Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown, since Nov. I, 1995.

Ohrt served as president of the Iowa State Association of Counties from 1976-77. He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church; American Legion Frank Lewis Blick PoSt #46, and 40/8 in Marshalltown; Franklin Lodge #14 A. F. & A. M., Bloomfield; and Strawberry Point Development and Tama-Toledo Industrial Development programs. He was a former member of Tama-Toledo Toastmasters, Toledo-Tama Kiwanis, Toledo Lions Club and the Isaac Walton League. He served on the Tama County Mental Health Board and was the treasurer for the Marshalltown Senior Citizens Center.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his first wife; a sister in infancy and a sister, Madeline Black.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria, Marshalltown; three sons, Gary (Celia) Ohrt, Marinette, Wis.; Darrell (Jan) Ohrt, Bloomington, Minn.; and Tom (Marjorie) Ohrt, Iowa City; a daughter, Diana (Mrs. Steve) Posusta, Marshalltown; a stepson, Dr. Dan (Sally) Wulff, Louisville, Ky.; a stepdaughter, Joy (Mrs. Rod) Thorson, Cedar Falls; three sisters, Maxine (Mrs. Arvy) Hydenrich, Deer, Ark.; Ada (Mrs. Ed) Skolnick, Long Beach, Calif.; Judy (Mrs. Paul) Vega, Cypress, Calif.; three brothers, Rolland (Frances) Ohrt and Merlin (Madonna) Ohrt, all of Waterloo and Gerald (Deloris) Ohrt, Pharr, Texas; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Pursel-Davis Funeral Home, and Crematory, Marshalltown, handled the arrangements.
