OBITUARY

Funeral services for Ethel S. Taylor, 97, were held Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at the United Methodist Church in Traer. Rev. Marshall Monthei officiated.

Ethel S. Taylor died Saturday, March 2, 2002 at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, after an extended illness.

Burial was held in the Buckingham Cemetery [Traer, IA].

Ethel S. Taylor was born January 28, 1905 at West Bend, IA, the daughter of George G. and Bertha (Crabtree) Schreiber. Ethel attended school at West Bend graduating in 1922. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls before her marriage to Elmer Erwin Taylor on April 4, 1931 at St. Paul, MN.

Ethel and Elmer made their home in Traer all their married life where they operated the Traer Star Clipper Newspaper and Travel Service for many years. During her years at the paper, Ethel was a columnist and was the travel guide for the travel service and edited the Iowa Federation of Women's Club Magazine. Ethel was an active member of the Traer community and held numerous positions in her church, civic groups and state organization. She was a member of the Traer United Methodist Church where she served as Sunday School Superintendent and teacher, a member of the choir having served as its director. Her numnerous memberships include, Order of Eastern Star, having served as Worthy Matron and District Instructor, PEO having served as Chaplin, GFWC and IFWC and past president. She also served as National Chairperson of the Status of Women for General Federation of Women's Clubs, State President of Iowa Council for Better Education. She also organized the Traer Federation of Community Club that built the Sunrise Hill Care Center where she served on its board of directors for 24 years. She also served as president of the Traer Public Library.

After Elmer's death on January 4, 1986 she continued to live in Traer and made her home at the Sunrise Hill Terrace apartments and later at the Sunrise Hill Care Center. Ethel's death came on Saturday, March 2, 2002 at the Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo at the age of 97 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter Betty and a granddaughter Melissa. She is survived by one granddaughter Michelle Norlin and five great-grandchildren.
