OBITURY

A Funeral Liturgy was celebrated for Paul J. Svoboda, 87, of Clutier, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, rural Clutier on Friday, July 19, 1996. Burial was in the church cemetery.

A scripture service and rosary was held Thursday evening at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Clutier and a rosary was recited Friday morning at the Clutier Funeral Chapel.

Paul died Monday, July 15, 1996, at Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer. He had been in failing health for several months.

Celebrant of the Funeral Liturgy was Father Thomas Purtell; co-celebrants were Father John Tilp and Father Mike Mescher. Lectors were Ludwig and Loreen Svoboda. Serving as organist was Catherine McLean; Chris Podhajsky was song leader.

Casket bearers were Greg Svoboda, Dustan Svoboda, Jeff Svoboda, Clint Svoboda, Jeff Podjhajsky and Nick Podhajsky. Memorial attendants included Monica Schneider, Yvonne Svoboda, Theresa Podhajsky and Jill Svoboda. Floral tributes were handled by Ardene Cross and Pauline and Leslie Sienknecht. Mark Svoboda and Laurence Svoboda served as ushers.

Paul Svoboda was born Jan. 15, 1909 on a farm near Clutier, IA. He was a twin son of John and Frances (Zmolek) Svoboda. Paul grew up in the Clutier area and attended Carroll #5 school, completing 8 grades.

On Oct 6, 1936, he was united in marriage to Albia Stoklas in Vining, IA. Paul and Albia lived three miles west of Clutier on a farm where Paul farmed his entire life.

In November 1992 he moved to Sunrise Hill Care Center.

He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church; K. D. Lodge No. 130; and the Tama County Farm Bureau.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Albia, on Sept. 15, 1990; three brothers, Peter, Charles, Joseph and three sisters, Anna, Mary and Margaret.

Paul is survived by six sons, Ludwig of Fairfax, Leo of Anchorage, AK, David of Toledo, Peter of Marshalltown, Claire and Paul of Clutier; one daughter Mrs. Robert (Cecilia) Podhajsky of Traer; 26 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren and one brother, Ben Svoboda of Clutier.
